Tom -

It's called a kipping pullup. It allows you to use the whole body to get yourself over the bar rather than just pure back / arm strength.

In the syntax of CrossFit, our stated goal is "increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains."

Currently, I can do approximately 12 dead hang pullups. I can also do approximately 35 kipping pullups. When we consider the amount of work being doing from a physics standpoint - meaning how many times I go from full extension to having my chin over the bar, I am capable of doing more work with kipping pullups than I am in doing dead hang pullups. Additionally, the kip is a more dynamic movement, requires the use of the hips and core, and requires elements of timing and athletic ability that the dead hang pullup simply does not.

So in the syntax of CrossFit and what I am working to achieve in this workout, I perform more work using the kipping pullup than I would be able to with a dead hang pullup.

Why do you swing so much doing the pull-ups? Doesn't that make them a LOT easier? If so, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the pull-up?

Thanks to both of you. It's a day later and I'm still amped up about it. It was more of a mental barrier than anything at this point, and it was cool to finally get through it.
